Abstract.
Sony CSL adapted the U.K. Met Office HadCM3/FAMOUS climate model for the CELL processor. The CELL, which is used in the PlayStation 3 game console, is an example of future hybrid CPU's. It combines, on a single chip, nine computing units that have different characteristics.
Our results show a speedup of the atmospheric radiation algorithm by a factor of eight by using the capabilities of the CELL. We will show the changes we have made to the code and the approach we have taken to obtain these results.
We will also address two related topics: the energy consumption of large simulations and some perspectives on the development of
scientific applications for distributed platforms.
The presentation also includes a demonstration of the visualisation of HadCM3/FAMOUS, which we developed for the PlayStation 3.
