Abstract :

In this talk, we propose to make a review of the research activities carried out at INRIA Sophia Antipolis since 1986 on the topic of multigrd methods and their use at ends of acceleration of compressible flow calculations.

The talk will begin with a short recall from the guiding principles from the multigrid methods before considering more in details the aspects which justified the realization of several theses whose we will give the principal results. All the studies concerned have as a common point i.e. the use of triangular not-structured grids (case 2D) or tetrahedral (case 3D) and the numerical resolution of systems of hyperbolic EDP (case of the system of the equations of Euler) or mixed hyperbolic/parabolic (case of the system of the Navier-Stokes equations). In particular, we will discuss the following points:

construction of a multigrid hierarchy by a volume agglomeration principle,
construction of a multigrid hierarchy by triangular/tetrahedral mesh coarsening,
multigrid treatment of unsteady flows on deforming meshes,
parallel multigrid algorithms.
Various applications of external and internal aerodynamics will be introduced by way of illustration of the possibilities of the algorithms developed.
