Droughts and Floods in Southern Africa: Role of Global and Local Ocean-Atmosphere

Abstract :

This talk will first present an overview of the South African climate. It will focus on some recent results about:

the impact of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation on the South African droughts and floods.
the influence of the Agulhas current on the floods and on the storms of the South African coast.
The role of the ocean-atmosphere interactions and the physical mechanisms will be particularly emphasized.
